An excellent supplement to small grains used for hay or silage, providing extra protein and yield. Winter peas (Pisum sativum subsp. arvense) are a type of peas planted in the fall to overwinter and serve as early spring forage. They are great for soil improvement because of their nitrogen-fixing ability and also act as a valuable food source for wildlife. Austrian Winter Peas are not suitable for grazing. Winter Peas make a good nitrogen-producing cover crop. Seed them in late winter with oats or in late summer with wheat or triticale.
