Cool-season grass is suitable for pastures and hay production.
Primary Feed:
Smooth Bromegrass (Bromus inermis) is a perennial, cool-season grass valued for its high forage quality and persistence. It’s commonly used in pastures, hay production, and conservation plantings.
Key Features:
- Perennial, sod-forming, cool-season grass that spreads by stolons.
- Highly palatable grass that is best suited for hay or silage. It can be used for pastures but overgrazing can be a problem. Allow 4-5 inches of space for regrowth.
- It is better suited for cooler climates. However, smooth brome is highly drought-tolerant. Extreme humidity can cause disease issues.
- It can be used for waterways due to its deep root system.
- A clean planting bed is suggested.
- Due to brome being slow to establish, it is recommended to plant brome at a rate of 15 to 25 pounds per acre, February through April or late August through September. Plant at least 6 weeks before the first killing frost, which typically occurs in fall.
